MCYL Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice Program

ADA Jordan Elliott serves on the Board for Marshall County Youth Leadership (MCYL), and part of that role includes helping plan the annual law enforcement and criminal justice program. During this program, the 30 members of the MCYL class, made up of local high school juniors and seniors, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of law enforcement and the criminal justice system in our community.

We held a judges panel featuring Hon. Christopher Abel, Presiding Circuit Court Judge, Hon. Matt Elliott, Circuit Court Judge, and Hon. Mitch Floyd, District Court Judge. Thank you to each of them for taking the time to speak with the students and answer their questions.

The Marshall County District Attorney’s Office also conducted a Criminal Jury Trial Simulation in the courtroom, where the students served as the jury. Thank you to ADA Roxana Lopez and ADA Riley Chandler for leading this exercise, as well as to the other members of our office who participated. We also appreciate Judge Mitch Floyd for assisting with the simulation.

Students also heard from a panel of local law enforcement leaders who took time out of their day to speak with the class and answer questions. Thank you to Chief Butch Cartee (Albertville PD), Chief Mike Turner (Boaz PD), Chief Shane Washburn (Arab PD), Chief Ryan Darnell (Guntersville PD), Sheriff Phil Sims and District Attorney Jennifer Bray.

Students had the opportunity to see the Marshall County Joint Special Response Team in action during a live demonstration. Members from several law enforcement agencies across the county participated, and we appreciate their time and effort. The class also enjoyed a K9 demonstration from School Resource Officer Lucero with the Albertville Police Department and his K9 partner, Loki.

At the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office, we believe it is important to invest our time and resources in our community, especially in the development of our young future leaders. It is always an honor to work with Marshall County Youth Leadership.
