Resentencing Hearing Upholds Life Without Parole for Brian Butler
Today marked another important step toward finality in justice for the family of Grant Police Chief Verlon LeMaster. Following a resentencing hearing pursuant to a law created after he was originally sentenced stating that juveniles could not be automatically sentenced to life without parole, Brian Butler was resentenced by specially appointed Circuit Judge Tim Jolley to Life Without Parole for the capital murder of Chief LeMaster.
After court, our office had the honor of presenting Chief LeMaster’s family with several items belonging to him, including his duty weapon, badge, and photographs. All of which are reminders of a man who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. While no sentence or courtroom proceeding can erase the pain of his loss, we hope today provided another measure of peace for those who loved him most.
District Attorney Jennifer Bray said, “I am especially thankful to Chief Assistant District Attorney Ed Kellett and Assistant District Attorney Riley Chandler for handling this resentencing hearing on behalf of our office and Chief LeMaster’s family. Their preparation and commitment to the victim’s family ensured this case continued to be handled with the respect it deserves. Each of us will always remember the ultimate sacrifice made by Chief LeMaster and others who have given their life in protection of their communities. It is only fitting that today’s sentence was handed down during National Police Week.”
We also want to recognize Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, who originally prosecuted this case as Marshall County District Attorney in 2008. Even with tomorrow’s election approaching and countless demands on his schedule, he made it a point to drive all this way and quietly sit in the back of the courtroom this afternoon in support of Chief LeMaster’s family. That simple act spoke volumes about his heart for victims and his continued commitment to justice.
Today and always, we continue to remember Chief LeMaster’s service, sacrifice, and legacy.
