Marshall County DA Warns of AI-Generated Explicit Images Involving Students

The Marshall County District Attorney’s Office is warning parents about a disturbing trend involving artificial intelligence (AI) and sexually explicit images of minors.

Over the past month, our office has received several cases involving middle and high school students across Marshall County. These cases involve students using AI technology to create nude images of their classmates.

The Dangers of AI-Generated Images

Today’s technology allows someone to turn an ordinary photograph into a realistic nude or sexually explicit image in seconds. Although AI creates these images, the emotional and psychological harm to victims is very real.

No child should fear that someone might manipulate an innocent photograph and share it throughout their school.

Serious Legal Consequences

The District Attorney’s Office wants parents and students to understand that AI-generated images are not exempt from the law.

Creating, possessing, or distributing AI-generated child sexual abuse material can lead to serious criminal charges. Depending on the circumstances, offenders may face felony convictions, prison sentences, and sex-offender registration requirements.

What Parents Need to Know

Local investigations have identified several AI platforms and websites that students have used to create these images.

We strongly encourage parents to monitor their children’s online activities and learn about emerging AI technology. Parents should also check the apps and websites their children use.

Most importantly, talk with your children about the serious legal and personal consequences of misusing AI.

A Warning to Students

Creating sexually explicit images of classmates is not a harmless joke or prank.

Sharing these images through social media, text messages, or group chats causes further harm to victims. These actions can also lead to additional criminal charges.

Reporting Suspicious Activity

Anyone who discovers sexually explicit AI-generated images involving minors should immediately notify law enforcement or school officials. Do not forward, share, or circulate these images.

The Marshall County District Attorney’s Office takes these offenses seriously and will aggressively prosecute violations of the law. Protecting children from exploitation remains one of our highest priorities.
